Fourteen

Sunday. We woke fairly early. Not bothering with baths or showers meant we had to mess up the bathroom a bit manually so to speak, but that did mean we were ready within a very few minutes. Downstairs there was some quiet breakfasty getting ready noises.

“Let’s go give Milly a hand.”

“Good thinking Batgirl. Let’s begin to earn our keep a bit.”

Milly was busily laying the table. “Good morning, Miss Saskia, Miss Saskia.”

“You can knock off the ‘Miss’ bit, Milly.” I waved my badge on its lanyard. “Us employees have to stick together.”

“Bur Saskia, that’s not ‘til next week isn’t it?” Milly looked surprised.

“Poo. Who’s to a couple of days more or less. Besides, we’re on special assignment for our new going-to-be-boss.”

“Ah. You’re looking after the American girl?”

“And her dad - don’t ask. Today will be a good day not to go to the shopping centre. We’re going to see if the other girls can come and help us intimidate it.”

Milly laughed. “Lucky it’s not my day off then. I’ll be staying right here. I’ve heard about you lot.”

“Right. Anything we can do to help?”

“I don’t think so. I don’t want to incur the displeasure of Mr Jeeves.”

“And why might Mr Jeeves be displeased?” Jeeves had snuck up on us without warning.

“Good morning, Jeeves,” said Saskia. “You move quietly, we’ll have to see about getting you fitted with a bell.”

“I think not, Miss Saskia.” Saskia waved her badge. “My apologies - Saskia. The original question still requires an answer. Why might I be displeased?”

“The Saskias wanted to help with breakfast. I said no, that you might not be pleased,” said Milly.

Jeeves turned to us. “I would not be displeased per se, but we have our particular way of doing things, Milly and I, I would not like that to be disrupted.”

“Oh we quite understand,” I said. “Perhaps the washing up?”

“We employ a machine in that capacity. Pay is minimal - just one dishwasher tablet per load and a little water and electricity. Presumably it is happy in its work - if not, it has never said.”

“Jeeves! That was a joke! It was. Obviously the rumours about your lack of sense of humour are completely unfounded.”

“Oh, I have a sense of humour. It is only rarely that it is appropriate for it to surface. Now, would you like an early breakfast or would you like to wait until Miss Dakota appears? I understand you need to use the telephone to make certain arrangements for this morning’s entertainment?”

I turned to Saskia, “How does he know that? I thought it was secret.”

“Didn’t you know?” said Saskia, “Butlers know everything.”

All four of us grinned - including Jeeves. “We’ll wait for Dakota if you don’t mind. If we use the spare office, can you let us know when she appears?”

“That will not be a problem.” Jeeves snuck away as silently as he’d appeared.

“Good thing you’re waiting,” said Milly. “I’m doing pancakes and stuff as well as the usual. I’ve even got some maple syrup.”

“Milly, you’re a treasure.
